The headlight cleaning system is a spray device for cleaning the headlights of vehicles.

Rules and Regulations

A headlight cleaning system is mandatory for:

  1. Motor vehicles registered since April 1, 2000 with headlights for high and low beam that are equipped with gas discharge lamps ( e.g. xenon light ) (in accordance with the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations Section 50, Paragraph 10) and
  2. For vehicles that, depending on the type, use a low beam with a luminous flux of over 2000 lm (in accordance with ECE regulation No. 48, Section 6.2.9).

The headlight cleaning system must comply with ECE regulation No. 45.

Types

The headlight cleaning system is similar in structure to the windscreen washer system . Cleaning liquid is pumped and sprayed from a tank .

The nozzles through which the cleaning fluid is applied to the headlight glass in modern vehicles at high pressure are often permanently attached in front of the headlights; however, they are increasingly being concealed in the bumper of the vehicle and only appear when the washing process is activated. In this design, the high pressure of the washing liquid pushes the nozzles out of the bumper into their spraying position through a piston.

Older vehicles are also equipped with small wiper arms comparable to windshield wipers , which are moved over the surface of the headlights by electric motors . Some older vehicles, for example models from Rolls-Royce , Volvo , Saab and Simca 1308 , as well as the older models from Mercedes for the Scandinavian market, have bristles on the wiper arm instead of a rubber lip. In these older vehicles, the headlights are not cleaned by a water pressure jet, but rather, as in a windshield cleaning system, by the interaction of washing liquid and mechanical displacement of the layer of dirt.

service

The operation of a headlight washer system differs depending on the vehicle manufacturer and the year of construction of the vehicle. Some systems are activated automatically as soon as the windscreen washer system is operated with the dipped headlights on, other systems have a separate switch for actuation.
