Android car (in the proper spelling and android car ) is one of Google LLC developed system to functions of Android - smartphones with the infotainment system in motor vehicles to use. Android Auto competes with similar systems such as MirrorLink , Huawei HiCar for Android smartphones and Apple's CarPlay.

In order to have to develop for fewer Android versions, the Google Assistant app will in future replace the Android version for cars.

Technical background

With Android Auto, the vehicle is used for the human-machine interface and the smartphone is used for the desired program logic. A car usually stays in the customer's possession longer than a mobile phone. Smartphones can be updated more easily. 35 automobile manufacturers want to use Android Auto .

Compatibility with Apple

The system is not compatible with Apple iOS , but according to Google's Andrew Brenner, parallel operation with Apple's CarPlay is not prevented by Android Auto.

Some cars support both CarPlay and Android Auto and MirrorLink. More and more manufacturers, including Audi and Daimler, prefer to use Android Auto for infotainment systems and do without MirrorLink.
