CarPlay is a system developed by the computer and smartphone manufacturer Apple to use various functions of an iPhone with the communication system in motor vehicles . The first version of iOS that CarPlay supports was iOS 7.1 from March 10, 2014 from the iPhone 5 onwards . With Android Auto, Google offers a competing system for Android smartphones.

application

CarPlay offers the option of operating the smartphone via the vehicle's infotainment system , and thus, for example, navigation , sending and receiving messages and playing music.

All "intelligent functions", such as the required (upgradeable) software, are not part of CarPlay, but are left to the smartphone. Thus, one tries to keep the constantly expanding possibilities of smartphones compatible with the electronics that are built into the vehicle.

CarPlay can be controlled in the vehicle using the Siri voice recognition software as well as conventional operating units - touchscreen (from most manufacturers), controllers (from Mercedes-Benz , BMW and Audi ), radio and steering wheel buttons.

The connection and data transfer between the iPhone and the vehicle's infotainment system is usually made via a Lightning cable . With iOS 9, Apple released the specification for wireless connections ( Wireless CarPlay ), and BMW was initially the only vehicle manufacturer to incorporate this. Infotainment systems from third-party manufacturers now also support Wireless CarPlay.

Current development

After various vehicle manufacturers such as Mercedes-Benz and Volvo had announced CarPlay as a retrofit solution for older vehicles and as an additional option in new vehicles that could be ordered in 2014, this idea was discarded. Instead, Mercedes-Benz announced that it would concentrate on developing CarPlay exclusively as an additional component that can be ordered in its new vehicles. At the vehicle manufacturer BMW, for example, the optional activation of CarPlay “ex works” costs 300 euros and covers a period of three years. After that, users have to pay around 100 euros per year for use. Almost all common automobile manufacturers now have vehicles with CarPlay on offer.

Pioneer is the first car radio manufacturer to offer the option of retrofitting CarPlay for existing vehicles. ""

There are now also Sony car radios (e.g. XAV-AX100 and 200) with CarPlay support.

At the end of January 2018, it was announced that Apple had activated WhatsApp as the first third-party messenger for CarPlay. From version 2.18.20 of WhatsApp, users can now dictate text messages via CarPlay and have Siri read out new messages to them. At WWDC 2018 , Apple announced during the presentation of iOS 12 that the new operating system version would allow navigation via third-party apps. These include u. a. Google Maps and the Waze community service, also offered by Google . Until then, Apple tried to largely prevent the use of additional third-party software via CarPlay, and alternative navigation software was also excluded. In addition to some other improvements, the support for charging stations in the " Maps " app and the introduction of "Car Key", which will initially be available in the BMW 5 Series in 2021 , were announced at WWDC 2020 .
