Karel van de Woestijne

Carolus Petrus Eduardus Maria (Karel) van de Woestijne (born March 10, 1878 in Ghent , † August 24, 1929 in Zwijnaarde ) was a Flemish poet and writer who wrote in the Dutch language . His biographer Peter Theunynck (* 1960) describes him as very lonely and withdrawn, but extremely active.

Career

Karel van de Woestijne obtained his university entrance qualification at the Ghent Koninklijk Atheneum aan de Ottogracht (today: Campus Atheneum Voskenslaan ). He then studied German at the University of Ghent . During his studies he became acquainted with French symbolism . From 1896 to 1907 he published two magazines - Today and Tomorrow by 1901 and Flanders from 1903 to 1907 .

He lived in Sint-Martens-Latem until November 1906 . First civil servant in the Ministry of Culture, he came under in the New Rotterdam Gazette . He was in charge of the Art column in Brussels for twenty-three years.

Karel van de Woestijne lived in Laeken and from 1920 to 1925 in Ostend . In the seaside resort he met with James Ensor and Constant Permeke . From 1920 to 1929 he taught Dutch literary history at his alma mater, Ghent University. From 1925 he lived in Zwijnaarde.

family

Karel's father, a coppersmith, died after a stroke when the boy was twelve years old. After the 25-year-old Karel van de Woestijne also lost his mother, he had to look after his three brothers Edward, Maurice and Gustave. On February 13, 1904, he married Mariette van Hende. The marriage resulted in the son Paul (* 1904) and the daughter Lily (* 1919). Mariette outlived her husband by forty years.
