Ernest Claes (1931)

Andreas Ernestus Josephus Claes [kla: s] (born October 24, 1885 in Zichem , Flanders ; † September 2, 1968 in Ixelles / Elsene ) was a Flemish writer.

He is one of the most widely read authors in Flanders. His best-known work is the homeland and picaresque novel De Witte (German "Flachskopf"), which has also been filmed twice.

Claes was Flemish-oriented and during World War II supported the nationalist unity movement VNV (Vlaams Nationaal Verbond "Flemish National Association"), which also had National Socialist connections. From 1941 he also took part in the Weimar poets' meeting organized by the National Socialist cultural propaganda .

His collaboration with the National Socialists was later blamed on him and he therefore spent three months in the Sint-Gillis prison near Brussels . However, he was acquitted of all charges and regained his civil rights.

Some of his works were published under the pseudonym G. van Hasselt .
