The Main Bridge Segnitz is a road bridge that spans the Main between Segnitz and Marktbreit in Lower Franconia at river kilometer 277 at the southern point of the Main Triangle . The structure has two lanes and a footpath and cycle path on both sides. It crosses State Road 2273.

history

In 1865 17 citizens of Segnitz tried to found a bridge building company. The aim of the initiative was to maintain a weather-independent connection to the train station in Marktbreit on the Treuchtlingen – Würzburg railway line, which opened in 1864 , with a fixed Main crossing . However, funding from the community could only be secured 20 years later. In 1887 the Segnitz municipal council decided to build the Main Bridge, which was supposed to replace a centuries-old ferry connection . In 1886 this had carried 104,375 people, 2504 carts and 700 head of cattle. At the end of 1889, the Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior gave its approval. The groundbreaking ceremony took place on March 20, 1893, and the bridge was inaugurated on December 3, 1893. The stone pillars and abutments were built by the market-wide master builder Michel, the iron superstructure, four bridge fields as single-span girders with two parallel- belted half-timbered girders above the carriageway, the mechanical engineering company Clett & Cie. In addition, a bridge toll house was built on the left bank of the Main for the bridge toll to be paid until 1942 . The total construction costs amounted to 160,000  marks , of which Segnitz had to bear 140,000 marks after deducting a subsidy from the Bavarian state of 20,000 marks.

On April 5, 1945, German troops blew up the superstructure of the bridge. Due to a shortage of materials and financing problems, the reconstruction of the destroyed bridge did not begin until 1948, the topping-out ceremony took place on November 20, and the building was reopened on May 15, 1949. By then the community had set up a ferry service. The construction costs amounted to 345,000 DM. The residents of Segnitz raised around 60,000 DM through their own work and 40,000 DM were donated. The MAN plant in Nuremberg built the 295 t superstructure with a load capacity of 16 t. A fitter had a fatal accident during the work on October 18, 1948. The inauguration was on May 15, 1949

In 1962 the bridge became the property of the Free State of Bavaria . In 1974/75 the carriageway was widened by eliminating the sidewalks on both sides and replacing a sidewalk structure attached to the upstream side.

Ships often collided with the bridge. In the period from 1997 to 2001 ships crashed into the bridge piers three times, which in 2001 resulted in the construction of a ramming protection for the river pillar. The steel pillar around the sandstone pillar was used to secure it against the impact of a ship, as it did not have sufficient stability for this load case. In 2008 a ship drove against the protective dolphins.

Due to the damaged and impact-endangered river pillar, an arched tied bridge was built as a replacement at the beginning of the 21st century, about 70 m above the old bridge . The groundbreaking ceremony took place on February 20, 2009, and the bridge was officially opened on September 5, 2010. The construction project was carried out as part of a new bypass for Segnitz. The construction costs of the bridge amounted to around 9.7 million euros. The project was implemented as part of a public-private partnership . Part of the financing, construction and maintenance for 25 years is taken over by the construction company; the Bavarian state pays its pre-financed portion in ten annual installments from the completion of the construction project.

construction

Bridge from 1949

Like the first Main Bridge, the structure was designed as a steel truss beam construction with parallel straps, but this time with the continuous girder as a structural system in the longitudinal direction. The superstructure was built using a cantilever . The old pillars had to be raised beforehand in order to ensure a sufficient headroom for shipping. The bridge was restricted to the use of vehicles with a gross vehicle weight of 16 t. The 138.7 m long superstructure had four openings with spans of 38.8 m in the end field on the Segnitz side, 39.3 m in the two middle fields and 21.3 m in the end field on the market broader side. In the transverse direction there was a trough cross-section with a roadway below. The carriageway was 5.3 m wide, with 0.575 m wide curbs on both sides. The sidewalks and sidewalks were 1.5 m wide.

It is a 160 m long bridge consisting of a northern foreland bridge with 23.15 m span, an eastern foreland bridge with two openings and spans of 22.85 m and 21.0 m and the 89 m wide and about 14 m high river bridge consists. The approach bridges are prestressed concrete structures with a two-web T-beam cross- section . With a clear width of 11 m between the railings, there is a roadway width of 6.50 m. The tied arch bridge was installed on the left bank of the Main and also included laying the semi-finished concrete slabs of the deck. On October 29, 2009, she was swum into the final position with a pontoon.
