Martin Smith (designer)

Martin Smith (* 1949 in Sheffield , Great Britain ) is a former British automobile designer .

job

After earning a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from Liverpool University and then a master's degree in automotive design from the Royal College of Art in London , he started working as a designer at Porsche AG in 1973 .

Audi

In 1977 he moved to Audi , where he headed the Advanced Design Studio in Munich from 1984. Here he designed the Audi Avus quattro together with J Mays . In 1991 he took over the management of the interior design and was responsible for the interior design of the Audi TT .

Opel

In 1997 he moved to Opel , where he was responsible as a product designer for the series in the compact class, and among other things, the design of the Opel Speedster and the Opel Astra G designed. He then became Senior Director of Design for the Opel and Vauxhall brands at General Motors Europe.

ford

In 2004 he moved to Ford of Europe as chief designer , where he first introduced the kinetic design to several concept vehicles , and from 2006 also gradually introduced the kinetic design to the entire Ford European model range , thus replacing the outdated new-edge design . Since 2006 Smith has not only been responsible for design at Ford of Europe, but also for Ford Asia Pacific and Africa. In May 2014, Ford announced that Smith was leaving the company at the end of the year, being succeeded by Joel Piaskowski .
