Quarterly journal for social and economic history

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The quarterly journal for social and economic history (VSWG) is a German scientific journal in the field of social and economic history .

history

It was founded in 1903 by Stephan Bauer , Georg von Below and Ludo Moritz Hartmann . Bauer and Hartmann had already published the Zeitschrift für Social- und Wirtschaftsgeschichte from 1893 to 1900 , the successor of which is the quarterly journal . The VSWG is the oldest journal of this discipline that is still published today; since 1923 the series of supplements of the VSWG has been published. In 1903 the magazine was first published by the Leipzig publisher CL Hirschfeld, today the VSWG is published by the Franz Steiner Verlag in Stuttgart ; Every year, it publishes around a dozen articles and 250 book reviews in four issues and provides information on new international publications, new research results and scientific controversies.

Following the example of the VSWG, several historical journals were founded abroad, such as The Economic History Review 1927 in Great Britain, The Journal of Economic and Business History 1928 in the USA and the Annales. Histoire, Sciences sociales 1929 in France.

Content orientation

The VSWG appears quarterly and consists of essays, miscommunications and reviews of current historical publications. It is the “program” of the VSWG, in the German-speaking area, but with an international focus, to cover the entire breadth of content and thematic, spatial and temporal breadth of social and economic history from the Middle Ages to the present day. She also wants to establish a connection between general history, economics and the social sciences for the “bridging subject” social and economic history .

Well-known historians who published in the VSWG included the long-time editor Hermann Aubin , Otto Brunner , Knut Borchardt , Werner Conze , Wilhelm Levison , Thomas Nipperdey , Theodor Schieder , Franz Schnabel , Hans-Ulrich Wehler and Wolfgang Zorn .

editor

The lead editor since 2018 has been Mark Spoerer , holder of the chair for economic and social history at the University of Regensburg. Joint editors are Jörg Baten , Markus A. Denzel , Thomas Ertl, Gerhard Fouquet and Günther Schulz .
