Markus A. Denzel

Markus A. Denzel (born April 20, 1967 in Nuremberg ) is a German economic historian who primarily deals with late medieval and early modern economic history.

Live and act

Markus Denzel earned his master's degree in history at the Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg in 1991 and received his doctorate in the 1993/1994 winter semester. From 1987 to 1992 he worked on DFG projects at the Bamberg Chair for Economic and Social History of Jürgen Schneider , and from 1992 to 1994 he was a fellow of the Cusanuswerk . After completing his doctorate, he was assistant to Karl Heinrich Kaufhold , his habilitation in Göttingen took place in 1997, and in 2000 he was appointed as an extraordinary professor. In addition to various professorships, he was visiting professor at the Free University of Bozen . Since 2002 Denzel has held the chair for social and economic history at the historical seminar at Leipzig University . From 2003 to 2005 he was dean of studies for the master’s degree courses at the Faculty of History, Art and Oriental Studies, and from 2005 to 2008 dean of the faculty.

He is particularly interested in international payments, the function of money and bills of exchange and currency history. He also examined the transfer system of the Roman curia and the role of the merchants serving as bankers, based on the Franconian area in the late Middle Ages.

He is a leading member of various national and international commissions and specialist societies ( Numismatic Commission of the Länder in the Federal Republic of Germany ; International Committee for Historical Metrology , Secretary General since 1997; Chairman of the Research Foundation for Comparative European Overseas History; Member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Istituto Internazionale di Storia Economica "F. Datini" ). In 2010 he was elected a member of the Academia Europaea . In 1998 he received the Heinz Maier-Leibnitz Prize .
