Wigbert , also Wichbert , Wipert , Wicpert , († September 8, 908 ) was Bishop of Verden from 874 to 908 .

Life

He was a descendant of the Saxon leader Widukind . His father, a grandson of Widukind, was Count Waltbert in Lerigau and his mother's name was Aldburg. Wigbert was related to Archbishop Hoger of Hamburg , among others .

Wigbert was rector (provost) of the family foundation founded by his father in Wildeshausen . He served as a deacon under King Ludwig the German and was one of the first Saxons to be an East Franconian court chaplain since 864 .

As bishop he received immunity from the king in 874 for the possessions of the Church of Verden. At the same time it was placed under royal protection.

In 876 he received goods for the diocese from Ludwig the Younger . He later took part in a synod in Forchheim . On this, King Arnulf gave him a number of goods in Westphalia on the Ruhr for life in 890, which would later fall to the cathedral chapter. Wigbert had already owned this as a fiefdom.

He also belonged to the court that negotiated the lawsuits of the Herford Abbey and the Corvey Monastery against the Diocese of Osnabrück over ten disputes. He is said to have built a chapel in Lüneburg, which became the basis of the Michaelskloster . In the year 900 he is mentioned in a papal bull. He was buried in the church in Wildeshausen.
