action
- 1st act
Five-year-old Matilda Wormwood is an exceptionally gifted child. Her family neglects her, so she spends her time reading and the occasional prank in revenge for bad treatment. When she comes to school, her class teacher Miss Honey immediately notices her outstanding intelligence. She wants to promote Matilda by sending her to a higher class, but the cruel headmistress Miss Trunchbull prevents this with reference to the strict school rules. Miss Honey seeks support from Matilda's parents, but realizes that they are not in the least interested in her daughter's education. She then looks for a way to help Matilda herself.
Between the two acts, Matilda's father warns the audience of the dangers of reading and recommends television, which he believes is much more instructive.
- 2nd act
Matilda, who is berated by Miss Trunchbull after complaining about the unjust punishment of another child, suddenly discovers that she has telekinetic skills that she can use to confuse the headmistress. She later demonstrates these skills to Miss Honey, who she then invites to her home. There Matilda finds out that Miss Honey lives in extremely poor circumstances because she has to pass all of her income on to a malicious aunt who has been looking after Miss Honey since her parents died. Matilda finds out that this aunt is Miss Trunchbull. In a class, Matilda magically gets a piece of chalk to write on the board what appears to be a message from Miss Honey's late father asking Miss Trunchbull to return her rightful inheritance to his daughter. Miss Trunchbull then escapes from school. The children celebrate their newfound freedom. In the end, Matilda is adopted by Miss Honey.
