Bertie Carvel

Bertie Carvel (born September 6, 1977 in London ) is an English film and stage actor.

Life

Bertie Carvel was born the son of a psychologist and a journalist. He spent his school days at the University College School in Hampstead , a private school in north-west London. He studied English at the University of Sussex and graduated with a bachelor's degree. From 2000 to 2003 he successfully completed an acting training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art .

He played the character of the magician Jonathan Strange in the TV series Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell . He also won the Laurence Olivier Award twice : in 2012 for his portrayal of Miss Trunchbal in Matilda the Musical and in 2018 for the role of Rupert Murdoch in Ink . Currently (2018) he can be seen in the production Doctor Foster as the unfaithful husband Simon (first broadcast in 2015 on BBC One ).

Carvel is the patron of the Playing Shakespeare facility of the Globe Theater . In 2013 and 2015 he was elected to the eleven-member committee of the actors' union Equity .
