Timothy David Minchin (born October 7, 1975 in Northampton , England , United Kingdom ), known as Tim Minchin , is an Australian - British comedian , actor , musician and representative of the skeptic movement .

Life

Tim Minchin was born in Northampton, United Kingdom and grew up in Perth , Western Australia . He started learning to play the piano at the age of eight, but gave up after three years. It was only after he started writing pieces of music with his brother Dan that he became interested in this instrument again. Minchin studied English and Theater at the University of Western Australia and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 1995 . He then began studying contemporary music at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts , which he successfully completed in 1998. In 2013 his alma mater awarded him an honorary doctorate. Minchin has lived in Los Angeles with his wife Sarah since 2014 . They have a daughter, Violet (* 2006 in London), and a son, Caspar (* 2009).

music

In his performances, Minchin combines humorous songs, which he underlines with piano music, with short inserts of stand-up comedy . He always appears barefoot, with wild hair and heavy eye make-up. Thematically, his songs range from social satire to sex fetishes to his own failed rock star ambitions. Religious topics are of particular importance. Minchin, himself an atheist , is of the opinion that there should be no satirical boundaries for religion as one of the strongest and most influential forces in the world.

Minchin's career began in 1998 after graduating from college. He initially composed music for documentaries and for the theater. In 2000 he wrote the musical Pop , in which he played himself. In 2001 his first CD, Sit , was released with his band Timmy the Dog. However, this had little success. In 2002 Minchin moved from Perth to Melbourne , but was initially unsuccessful. It wasn't until 2005 that his breakthrough came with his first show, Darkside . This was followed by the shows So Rock (2006) and Ready For This? (2008). In 2010 he offered his single The Pope Song for free download.

In 2011 he went on a tour with the Heritage Orchestra . His fourth live album was recorded at the concerts in the Royal Albert Hall in London . In 2012 he took on the role of Judas Iscariot in the arena tour of the musical Jesus Christ Superstar .

Tim Minchin wrote the music for the musical Matilda , which premiered in December 2010 by the Royal Shakespeare Company . His second musical, Groundhog Day , based on the movie Groundhog Day and since April 2017 August Wilson Theater on Broadway played.

criticism

In 2005 an appearance by Tim Minchin in Edinburgh got a bad review in the Guardian , which suggested that Minchin should be tarred and feathered. Three years later he performed a song about the named critic Phil Daoust, in which he let wild fantasies of violence run wild and wished the family members of the critic dead. The critic, when asked to comment, replied that he had not heard the song and that his life was too short for that. After all, he had already had to listen to an entire Minchin show for review purposes.
