The Heritage Orchestra , or Her-O for short , is a British orchestra known for combining classical music with modern musical styles.

style

The orchestra sees itself as a counter-image to the classical orchestral tradition and usually does not perform traditional pieces of classical music, but rather its own compositions or compositions by musicians of various styles such as folk , rock , electro , hip-hop and jazz .

history

The orchestra was founded in 2004 by producer and manager Christopher Wheeler and composer and conductor Jules Buckley . Buckley is the musical director to this day. Since then, the Heritage Orchestra has performed regularly at festivals and major venues such as the Barbican Hall and the Royal Albert Hall . It is currently located in the De La Warr Pavilion in Bexhill-on-Sea .

One of the first appearances was a co-production with Brian Eno and the Royal College of Art . In 2008 they performed the music for the film Blade Runner together with the band Massive Attack at the Meltdown Festival in the Royal Festival Hall in London . In the following years the Heritage Orchestra worked with various musicians, including Dizzee Rascal , The Streets , Amon Tobin , Mike Patton , John Cale and Antony and the Johnsons , Goldie , Ben Folds and Björk . In 2010 the orchestra performed with Jamie Cullum at the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall in London. In 2011 it went on a tour with musician and comedian Tim Minchin , during which a live album was recorded. The Heritage Orchestra performed together with DJ Pete Tong at the 2016 BBC Proms . The album Classic House that resulted from this collaboration reached first place in the British charts . With Jane Birkin , the Heritage Orchestra performed the Gainsbourg Symphonic program in 2017 , a tribute to Birkin's former partner Serge Gainsbourg .

In 2009 the Heritage Orchestra received the Independent Music Award for its production with hip-hop musician DJ Yoda .
