Promises, Promises ( German  Das Appartement ) is a musical by Burt Bacharach , the lyrics are by Hal David , the book is by Neil Simon based on the film Das Appartement by Billy Wilder and I. A. L. Diamond . The musical was produced by David Merrick . It premiered on December 1, 1968 at the Shubert Theater in New York . With 1,281 performances, the musical was a huge success. It is Bacharach's only musical.

It premiered in London's West End on October 2, 1969 at the Prince of Wales Theater.
The German-language premiere was on April 16, 1970 in the Theater des Westens in Berlin . The German translation is by Werner Wollenberger (dialogues) and Charly Niessen (song lyrics).

In the meantime, Chuck Baxter, accountant at the Continental insurance company, has made his apartment available to four bosses, so to speak as an hourly hotel , which he hopes will help him advance professionally.
