Carl Bernhard Garve

Carl Bernhard Garve (born January 24, 1763 in Jeinsen near Hanover ; † June 21, 1841 in Herrnhut ) was a Protestant theologian and hymn poet .

Life

Carl Bernhard Garve was born the son of a manorial landlord. At the age of five he was sent to the boys' institution of the Moravian Brethren in Zeist (Holland), and later to that of Neuwied (Rhine). In 1777 he began a scientific training in the Niesky (Silesia) pedagogy , where he later became a teacher. From 1799 Garve was a preacher in Amsterdam , from 1801 in Ebersdorf , from 1809 in Norden , from 1810 in Berlin and finally from 1816 for 21 years in Neusalz (Oder). In 1836 Carl Bernhard Garve retired in Herrnhut near Zittau (Upper Lusatia).

Works

Albert Knapp published 63 songs by him in his Evangelical Song Treasury for Church and House. 36 pieces were included in the Berlin hymnbook. The most famous songs are among other things "Kingdom of the Lord, Kingdom of the Lord, break out in full day", "My Jesus hand is strong and he will hold me forever", "Your word, O Lord, is mild dew for souls in need of consolation" , "Like a shepherd to pasture your people, you condescended yourself gently" and "You who are the truth yourself".

The Garvehaus in Jeinsen , inaugurated on May 16, 1971, was named in his honor.
