Reclam's musical guide

The Reclams Musical Guide is a music guide in manual form. It was first published in 1989 by Charles B. Axton and Otto Zehnder in the publishing house Philipp Reclam jun. published in Stuttgart . The 10th updated and expanded edition with a length of 710 pages was published in 2009. The following information relates to this edition.

Structure / content

The musical guide contains a small foreword, the lexicon section and an appendix on 710 pages .

In their foreword (pp. 7–11), which also contains some explanations of terms from the technical language of musicals that are important for understanding, the authors of the musical guide write, among other things: “The musical, one of us as an import from the United States - and since 1960 also from England - a genre of music theater that has become known, its original creations are strongly influenced by the cultural, political and social conditions in the USA, not least by its immigrants and their traditions. "

The lexicon section (pp. 13–644) contains the musicals in chronological order . This part begins with Lady, Be Good ( Broadway - Premiere : 1924) and concludes with Spamalot (Broadway premiere: 2005). There are a total of 131 of the most famous musicals from Broadway and London's West End , which - with a few exceptions - are presented in detail. The 33 images (in black and white) scattered in this part illustrate and document scenes from first performances in theaters in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

The appendix (pp. 645–710) contains - each in alphabetical order - biographies (pp. 647–677), a list of figures and a reference to sources (pp. 679–681), an explanation of the abbreviations used in the work (p. 683 –684), a list of people (pp. 685–702) and a list of works (pp. 703–705). Inserted (pp. 706–709) are two city maps (venues in the New York theater district and in London's West End).
