History and background
Since 1959, the Grammy Awards are presented annually in numerous categories by the Recording Academy in the United States to recognize artistic achievement, technical competence, and overall outstanding performance regardless of album sales or chart position.
One of these categories is the Grammy Award for Best New Age Album. Originally known as the Grammy Award for Best New Age Recording , the award was first given in 1987 at the 29th Grammy Awards ceremony to Swiss musician Andreas Vollenweider for his album Down to the Moon . From 1988 to 1991 the category was named Best New Age Performance . The prize has been awarded as Best New Age Album since 1992 . In addition to the artists, the award winners have also included the album's producers and sound engineers since 2001.
American saxophonist Paul Winter holds the record for most wins in the Grammy Award for Best New Age Album category . He has won six times so far (four times as the band leader of his group Paul Winter Consort ). Paul Winter is also the only musician to have won the award in a row. In 1994 he received the award as a member of his ensemble for Spanish Angel and in 1995 as a solo artist for Prayer for the Wild Things . The Irish musician Enya has received four prizes so far. The Japanese composer and musician Kitarō holds the record for most nominations and was the 2001 winner. Peter Kater was nominated for the thirteenth time at the Grammy Awards 2018 and won his first Grammy for Dancing on Water . R. Carlos Nakai is the only artist to be nominated for more than one work in the same year - at the 42nd Grammy Awards in 2000 he was nominated alongside Paul Horn for Inside Monument Valley and for his own album Inner Voices . The Tangerine Dream group holds the record for the most consecutive nominations. She was nominated five times in a row from 1992 to 1996.
