White Sun is an American new age band from Los Angeles .

Career

The mid-2010s, the singer Gurujas, the gong virtuoso and joined yoga teacher Harijiwan and the composer Adam Berry to the New Age Project White Sun together. Gurujas has a classical music background - the mother trained as a violinist - and was a member of the children's choir of the renowned Cleveland Orchestra in her youth . In college she became interested in yoga and became a follower of Kundalini yoga , which she also actively promotes. Your teacher is Harijiwan, who in turn was instructed by Yogi Bhajan , who stands for Kundalini Yoga, which is particularly widespread in the West. Harijiwan came up with the idea for White Sun to spread the Gurbani mantras from the Adi Granth , the sacred scripture of the Sikh, through music. The melodies mostly come from Gurujas. For the musical implementation, they turned to Adam Berry, who became known for his music for film and television (including South Park ) and received an Emmy Award in 2011 .

The self-produced debut album, which was named exactly like the project, was released in 2015 and helped them to a certain degree of awareness. It led to a recording deal with the Be Why label . The album White Sun II was released just a year later . Contributors included Grammy winner Mamadou Diabate ( kora player), Gabe Witcher from the Punch Brothers ( fiddle ) and tabla scholar Abhiman Kaushal, who had also worked on the album Passages by Ravi Shankar and Philip Glass , as well The Waters , a very well known R&B backing vocal group.

The album reached number 1 on the Billboard New Age albums and number 2 on the US world music chart. It was also able to place in the Heatseekers Charts . At the 2017 Grammy Awards , White Sun received the award for the best new age album of the year.
