Mamadou Diabate (born December 31, 1973 in Torosso, Houet Province , Burkina Faso ) is a Burkinabe musician and composer . His main instrument is the balafon (a West African xylophone ).

Life

Mamadou Diabate comes from a traditional Sambla family of musicians in Burkina Faso (West Africa). At the age of five he received music lessons from his father Penegue Diabate, who was known as a balafon player far beyond the borders of Sambla culture. At the age of eight he began his training with well-known balafonists from neighboring peoples such as B. Daouda Diabate († 2018).

He has lived in Vienna since 2000 . He is the founder and leader of the group "Percussion Mania", which has existed since 2006. He is also the founder and chairman of the non-profit organization Sababu , which has been running an elementary school in Sababu in Bobo Dioulasso (Burkina Faso) since 2010. Since 2016 he has been involved in a linguistic project by Laura McPherson at Dartmouth College ( USA ).

He has appeared at well-known festivals around the world such as the Rudolstadt Festival , the Salzburg Festival , WOMAD , Glatt & Verkehrt Festival and Africa Festival . He also released numerous albums.
