Johan Wilhelmus "Jo" van Marle (born December 21, 1924 in Zwolle , † March 14, 1995 ibid) was a Dutch football official . Between 1980 and 1993 he was chairman of the KNVB .

Career

Van Marle played football at the lower-class Zwolle AC , whose fortunes he also directed as club president. After various activities at the Dutch Football Association, he was elected chairman in 1980 to succeed Wim Meuleman, who had been in office since 1966 . During his tenure, the Dutch senior team won their first international title at the European Championship finals in 1988 . Jacques Georges proposed him as his successor as UEFA President, but van Marle turned it down for health reasons. Together with Michel D'Hooghe , the President of the Belgian Federation , he initiated the joint application to host the 2000 European Championship , which was ultimately approved in 1995. In 1993 he handed over the presidency at the KNVB to Jeu Sprengers ; then he was appointed honorary chairman.

Van Marle died in 1995 at the age of 70. The home stadium of Zwolle AC was then renamed Sportpark Jo van Marle . During his lifetime he was awarded the Order of Orange-Nassau with the rank of knight .
