Wilhelmus Antonius Gerardus Maria "Wim" Meuleman (born February 23, 1910 in Dieren , † October 10, 1988 in Naarden ) was a Dutch football official . Between 1966 and 1980 he was chairman of the KNVB .

Career

Meuleman played at Quick Nijmegen in his youth before a meniscus injury forced him to retire. He then became a football referee and directed games at the highest level in the Netherlands. He later became chairman of the amateur club ZVV Be Quick and, from 1948, of the EEV Eindhoven . After moving to Suriname for professional reasons in the 1950s , he took over the office of chairman of the Surinaamse Voetbal Bond there in 1957 . In the early 1960s he returned to the Netherlands, where he was elected KNVB chairman in 1966 to succeed Toon Schröder . During his tenure, Dutch football became more professional, with the Euro apocalyptic triumphs of Feyenoord Rotterdam and Ajax Amsterdam in the 1970s as well as the successes of the Dutch senior team , which did not miss the title at the 1974 and 1978 World Cups, respectively. During his tenure, he was seen as a good moderator between amateur and professional sport, while he skillfully maneuvered the association through the discussions and tensions that arose from the divergence of financial opportunities. In 1980 he handed over his office to Jo van Marle , after which he was made honorary chairman in November of that year.

Meuleman died in 1988 at the age of 78. During his lifetime he was awarded the Order of Orange-Nassau with the rank of knight .
