Matthieu "Jeu" Sprengers (born May 24, 1938 in Tegelen , † April 6, 2008 in Venlo ) was a Dutch football official .

Career

Sprengers was initially treasurer and from 1981 chairman of the Dutch football club VVV-Venlo . In 1985 he rose to the Eredivisie with the club after several attempts, in which the team failed only in the promotion play-offs . In the 1986/87 and 1987/88 seasons , the club surprised by reaching fifth place in the top Dutch league twice in a row, but had to leave the top performers and regular players Raymond Libregts , John Lammers and Frank Berghuis after a bloodletting , Ger van Rosmalen and Stan Valckx descend again in the summer of 1989. After suffering a heart attack in 1990 , Sprengers resigned from office.

In 1993 Sprengers succeeded Jo van Marle as chairman of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Voetbal Bond . In 2000 he was a member of the organizing committee of the 2000 European Championship finals, which were organized jointly with the Belgian federation and held in the Netherlands and Belgium . He then moved up to become treasurer within UEFA . In the European association, he made a name for himself in particular as an advocate of the smaller associations, which earned him the nickname “ Robin Hood of UEFA”. After Michel Platini took over the chairmanship of UEFA in 2007, he resigned from his position.

After determining the rotation procedure in 2007, Sprengers promoted the award of the 2018 and 2022 football World Cups to FIFA and the national associations organized there for the - ultimately unsuccessful - awarding of the 2018 World Cup final round to the Netherlands and Belgium for another jointly organized tournament. At the world association, he also worked on various bodies, including the Internal Audit Committee and the FIFA Strategic Committee

Sprengers died in the spring of 2008 at the age of 69 after a brief illness. His successor as KNVB chairman was the former referee Michael van Praag .
