Michael van Praag (1989)

Michael van Praag (born September 28, 1947 in Amsterdam ) is a Dutch sports official and former football referee .

Michael van Praag was active as a referee from 1963 to 1979. From 1989 to 2003 he was President of Ajax Amsterdam and since 2008 he has been President of the Royal Netherlands Football Association . In 2009 he was elected to the UEFA Executive Committee.

Van Praag ran for the office of FIFA President in 2015 against incumbent Sepp Blatter , with the aim of reforming FIFA, which has been overshadowed by allegations of corruption for years and to step down after a term, and was supported in this by the members of UEFA. However, he withdrew his candidacy a few days before the election in order to increase the chances of Blatters being voted out. After Blatter's re-election and his resignation shortly thereafter, van Praag was counted among the possible successors; instead, however, Michel Platini and his substitute candidate Gianni Infantino ran for the UEFA member countries in the election. In September 2016, after the suspension of incumbent Platini, van Praag stood for the election of the new president of UEFA, but was defeated by the Slovenian Aleksander Čeferin .
