In 2011, Čeferin was elected President of the Slovenian Football Association. Between 2011 and 2016, he was also the second and third vice chairman of the UEFA legal committee.

Journalists from the Norwegian football magazine Josimar discovered contradictions in his résumé that have not yet been clarified. There are doubts as to whether, according to the Slovenian statutes, he was active on the board of a football club long enough before he took over the association presidency. His involvement with the futsal club KMN Svea Lesna Litija has also been questioned.

UEFA presidency

On September 14, 2016, Čeferin was elected the seventh President of UEFA. This automatically made him a Vice-President of FIFA. At the UEFA Congress in Athens he received 42 votes, while his opponent, Dutchman Michael van Praag , received 13 votes. In the election he was u. a. supported by the DFB and the former UEFA general secretary and current FIFA boss Gianni Infantino .

In April 2017, some reform proposals from Čeferin in the area of good governance were adopted, including the introduction of a time limit for the UEFA presidency and membership of the UEFA Executive Committee. In addition, candidates for the Executive Committee have since then had to hold a leading role (President, Vice-President, Secretary General or CEO) in their national associations.

Čeferin has also repeatedly spoken out in favor of tightening the financial fair play measures that have been in force since 2009. On February 7, 2019, he was confirmed in office for a further four years.

Positions in Sports

According to media reports, Čeferin supports Scandinavia’s application for the EM 2028. In return, Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Norway are said to have made their support for Čeferin public at an early stage. This agreement is said to have come about through the mediation of Gianni Infantino and his advisor, the Norwegian Kjetil Siem .

Čeferin wants to continue to host the European Football Championship with 24 instead of 16 teams as before. On the other hand, he is skeptical about an intended increase in the field of participants to 40 countries at the soccer world championships. He described the idea of a European super league as a competition to the previous UEFA Champions League as a "war against UEFA".

Čeferin suggested moving the final of the European Champions League to other continents, such as New York . This immediately met with criticism.
