Lennart Johansson (born November 5, 1929 in Stockholm - † June 4, 2019 ) was a Swedish sports official . From April 19, 1990 to January 26, 2007 he was President of the European Football Association UEFA and a member of the Executive Committee of the World Football Association FIFA in the role of Vice-President. From January 26, 2007 Johansson was Honorary President of UEFA.

Career

At the beginning of his career in Sweden, Johansson was managing director at Forbo Forshaga Göteborg (1950–1990), at the same time a board member at Forbo Giubiasco (since 1980), at Forbo AG Eglisau member member ExCo (1980–1990), at AB Svenska Spel Visby board member (since 1984), member of the board of directors of AB Operakällaren (since 1990), chairman of AIK Fotboll AB (since 1999) and honorary president of the Swedish associations FA / SEF / AIK.

When he was elected the new president of the world football association FIFA in 1998, he was defeated by the previous general secretary Sepp Blatter .

Johansson was chairman of the organizing committee for the 2006 World Cup in Germany and also at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and Korea. Along with Sepp Blatter, FIFA President, he was one of the most influential and powerful personalities in world football. On April 19, 1990, he succeeded French UEFA President Jacques Georges and was automatically Vice-President of FIFA since that election. Before joining UEFA, he headed the Swedish Football Association for five years. The Lennart Johansson Cup named after him has been awarded to the Swedish football champions since 2001 . In 2005 he received the Federal Cross of Merit for his services .

In July 2006, Johansson announced that he would run for the next UEFA President election in January 2007. However, he lost the vote on January 26th with 23:27 votes against the only opposing candidate Michel Platini from France. After his defeat, however, Johansson was named honorary president of UEFA at Platini's suggestion. Johansson was made an honorary member of the German Football Association (DFB) in 2007.

Johansson suffered a stroke in the summer of 2008 . He died on June 4, 2019 after a brief, serious illness.

Johannson lived in Stockholm and, in addition to his mother tongue, Swedish, also spoke English and German.
