Frederic Alois Friedel (* 1945 ) is a German linguist and science journalist . He is particularly interested in computer chess .

Frederic Friedel is a qualified linguist and studied philosophy , philosophy of science and linguistics in Hamburg and Oxford . He produced television programs on the subjects of computers , computer chess programs , chess computers and computer chess, as well as artificial intelligence .

Together with the computer scientist and chess programmer Dieter Steinwender , he founded the “Journal of the First Computer Chess Club of the Federal Republic” in 1982, which appeared for the first time in 1983 under the title “Computer Chess International” and from mid-1986 under its final title “ Computer Chess and Games ” (CSS ) and was its editor-in-chief . In 1987 Friedel founded the company ChessBase together with the physicist Matthias Wüllenweber , which today is one of the world's most important and well-known companies for chess software . In 1995 he also wrote the book “Schach am PC ” together with Steinwender .

Frederic Friedel is well known or even friends with many personalities in chess and computer chess , such as Anand , Carlsen , Donninger , Kramnik , Lékó , Short , Svidler , Topalow and the Polgár sisters Judit , Zsófia and Zsuzsa . The former world chess champion Garri Kasparow , whom Friedel met in 1985, is one of his close friends . Friedel was a member of Kasparov's team when he competed against the Deep Blue chess computer developed by IBM in 1997 .

Friedel and his wife Ingrid have sons Martin and Thomas.
