Frank Berghuis (born May 2, 1967 in Vierhouten , Netherlands ) is a former Dutch football player who played in the national team once in 1989 .

Club career

Frank Berghuis, usually called by his nickname “Pico”, played as a child for AGOVV and, due to a move, for the Apeldoornse Boys in Apeldoorn . At the age of 16 the striker moved to PSV in Eindhoven , where his professional career began as a 17-year-old with a single game in the 1984/85 season, in which he also scored his first league goal. The following season he completed two more games for the Philips Factory Club. For the 1986/87 season he moved to VVV in Venlo , where the left wing conquered a regular place; in 27 games he scored five goals; another season in Venlo ended with a goal in 20 games with a little less success. Back at PSV he was unable to assert himself in the next season and after two appearances for PSV in the Eredivisie , he went to league rivals PEC Zwolle for the rest of the season . In the season 1989/90 he experienced his breakthrough at FC Volendam . In 33 games he was able to score 13 goals. During this time, he also played in the national team.

After another successful season in Volendam, Berghuis signed a two-year contract with Galatasaray Istanbul in 1991 . After the Turkish first division club did not want to fulfill the contract and Berghuis missed the plane for a trial training at Sheffield Wednesday due to a traffic jam , he stayed at FC Volendam for two more years. In 1993 he moved to the Belgian first division SK Lommel , where he stayed for two years. In 1995 he moved back to the Netherlands. With second division club Cambuur Leeuwarden he rose three seasons later to the Eredivisie . In December 2000 he ended his active career with Cambuur due to an injury. He played 232 first division games in which he scored 53 goals; he also had 93 appearances in the second division with 17 hits.

National team

Berghuis had already played several international youth matches for the KNVB when he played successfully on the left wing position at FC Volendam in the 1989/90 season. In December 1989, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the KNVB, there was an international match against Brazil in Rotterdam . Due to injuries, many first guard players such as Ruud Gullit , Marco van Basten and Frank Rijkaard had to cancel, while bond coach Thijs Libregts called some players into the squad who had no international experience. Berghuis was nominated shortly before the match, when substitute Frans van Rooy also signed off (the former Royal Antwerp player remained without an international appearance afterwards). After Berghuis had made a good impression in training, he made his debut in the starting XI; In addition to him, Martin Laamers , Bart Latuheru and Edward Sturing also had their first appearance in the orange jersey. In contrast to the Dutch, Brazil started with the best team, and so the entire Oranje team played respectfully and defensively. Berghuis' direct opponent was the New Leverkusen Jorginho . Nevertheless, the Dutch were able to keep the game open for a long time under the direction of German referee Werner Föckler , but in the 55th minute Careca scored the 1-0 for the guests; only three minutes later, in the 58th minute, Berghuis was replaced by the experienced John van 't Schip . For both wingers alongside Wim Kieft , Berghuis and Latuheru, it was their only appearance in the senior national team.

Trainer

After his active career, Berghuis made his way into coaching life and trained youth teams from Cambuur Leeuwarden and AGOVV as well as SBV Vitesse from Arnhem , which cooperated with AGOVV in youth work . Since the beginning of the 2008/09 season he coached the first team of the Apeldoornse Boys in the fourth class (seventh division). In 2011 he returned to Arnhem to work as an assistant coach for the second team from Arnhem and Apeldoorner, Jong Vitesse / AGOVV .

Private

Berghuis passed his passion for football on to his sons. Steven Berghuis also turned professional and made his debut for the Dutch national football team in 2016, almost 27 years after his father; the younger Tristan played in the youth of Vitesse Arnhem , PEC Zwolle and PSV as well as in the Dutch U-16 national team; In the 2016/17 season he competes in the first class for the Apeldoorner WSV .
