  • Elspeet, which is located south-east of Nunspeet between forest areas (4,510 inh.)
  • Vierhouten, which lies between four forests (Dutch houten ) (705 inhabitants).

Location and economy

Nunspeet is located at the northwest edge of the forest area Veluwe on the motorway A28 and the railway line from Zwolle via Amersfoort to Amsterdam and Utrecht . The place is a magnet for tourism in the Veluwe.

history

Around the year 1000, the Ermelo Education Authority ( Schoutambt in Dutch ) came into being, encompassing the area of the present-day municipalities of Ermelo , Harderwijk and Nunspeet. When Harderwijk developed into an independent city in the 13th century , Ermelo (south of the city) and Nunspeet (northeast of Harderwijk) remained as farming villages. However, the urban development of Ermelo and Nunspeet was increasingly different. Especially after 1850, Ermelo, from where Nunspeet was administered, established itself as a center of psychiatric sanatoriums, while Nunspeet, which was growing faster and beautifully located in the forest of the Veluwe , chose tourism as a source of income. After decades of tug-of-war, the two villages separated in 1972. This development was unique in the Netherlands, where usually a large number of smaller municipalities merged into larger administrative units. " Het Verscholen Dorp " (the hidden village) was created in the forest near Vierhouten during World War II . It served as a shelter for people who had to go into hiding. Part of the underground facility can still be visited.

Attractions

The many forests and heathlands where shepherds still graze their animals have been attracting numerous tourists for over 150 years. Campsites, holiday apartments, children's playgrounds and small hotels can be found everywhere in the municipality. Nunspeet also owns an important gallery for modern visual arts, called "DeMedici", and a permanent garden show called "Kijktuinen".
