history

The association was founded on February 2, 1913. Since 1919 the club has been called "Apeldoornse Geheel Onthouders Voetbal Vereniging" (AGOVV) ( German  Apeldoorner Abstinenzler-Fußballverein ), because the founders were opponents of the then common abuse of drinks at the end of football games. The club culture changed in the following years when the club changed its name in 1921 to 'Alleen Gezamenlijk Oefenen Voert Verder' (in German: Only practice together brings you further). In 1938 AGOVV made it to the final of the Dutch Cup , but was defeated there by the VSV , a predecessor of the Velsen club Telstar , with 1: 4.

In 1971 AGOVV was set back to the amateurs by the KNVB during the major renovation of the professional soccer clubs. Violent protests in downtown Apeldoor did nothing to change that. The club played in various amateur leagues of the KNVB. In the 2001/02 season AGOVV was champion in the third class Hoofdklasse and in the same year overall amateur champion.

In 2003/04 the club returned to the professionals. Since the 2003/04 season, the club has been using the name of the city in its official name: AGOVV Apeldoorn . AGOVV Apeldoorn now plays in the Eerste Divisie , the second highest division. In addition to the professional players' team, there has also been an amateur team since 2003. The team of amateurs, who lost their best players to the professionals, were relegated in 2004 from the high class to the first class .

When returning to the Eerste Divisie , the former international Jurrie Koolhof was hired as the head coach of the first team. The former head coach of the amateur team Stanley Menzo (ex-goalkeeper of Ajax Amsterdam , PSV Eindhoven , Girondins de Bordeaux and AGOVV Apeldoorn) did not have the required diplomas to become a coach. After two disappointing seasons under Koolhof (two times 10th place in the table) Stanley Menzo, who meanwhile had the necessary diplomas, was hired as the new head coach at the beginning of the 2005/06 season.

After starting over as a professional club, AGOVV repeatedly had major problems in both sporting and financial terms. In the football year 2011/12, the club did not finish last in its league only because FC Emmen had been deducted six points for failing to meet the financial requirements of the KNVB . In December 2012, the tax authorities initiated insolvency proceedings against AGOVV with an outstanding claim for approx. 400,000 euros. This could no longer be averted despite a four-week postponement granted by the court. On January 8, 2013, the association was declared insolvent. After the 10-day appeal period had not been used, AGOVV was withdrawn from the championship on January 17, 2013. All matches of the season that had already been played were considered not played and were removed from the championship table. AGOVV amateurs were not affected by the bankruptcy of the professionals.

Stadion

AGOVV Apeldoorn has been playing in the Berg en Bos sports park in the villa district of the same name in Apeldoorn-West since 1921 . The facility is on the edge of a forest and is one of the most beautiful due to its location. The main grandstand, built in 1921, is a listed building. The Berg en Bos sports park was completely renovated in 2005 when it returned to the second division . The old stadium had no seats next to the relatively small main grandstand. During the renovation, new grandstands with seats were built, but these reduced the stadium's capacity from 10,000 to 3,500 spectators. From 2010 to 2016 the sports park was sponsored by Fly Brazil / Desko-Stadion . The club was aiming for promotion to the honor division and covered a new stadium building, which local residents disliked. Since the bankruptcy and the departure to the amateur camp, this has been done.
