Sigma Olomouc , officially SK Sigma Olomouc , is a Czech football club , based in the Central Moravian town of Olomouc ( Olomouc in Czech ).

Club history

Founding years

In the summer of 1919, a group around 16-year-old Karel Tatíček decided to found a football club in Hejčín. At that time Hejčín was still an independent village on the outskirts of Olomouc. The Fotbalový klub Hejčín lost their first official game against a selection of students from Olomouc with 1:19. A short time later, another football team, the so-called Hejčínská jedáctka , was formed in Hejčín . After several friendlies between these two teams, it was decided to join forces. But there was a dispute about the future club name. Finally it was decided to have one last encounter, the name of the winner should also be adopted by the loser. The game won the FK Hejčín, but this then suggested a compromise. The new club should be called SK Hejčín. In the founding year, Hejčín was incorporated into Olomouc along with two towns and ten other places. It was not until 1925 that the SK Hejčín became a member of the football association. The club, which played in the lower leagues, did not have its own football field until 1946, when it was only possible to build its own field in the neighboring district of Řepčín to the north.

post war period

About a year later the club was renamed for the first time, and many other name changes followed. It was now called Hejčínský SK Bánské a Hutní Olomouc . This took account of the fact that numerous players were employed by the local steelworks Moravské železárny , MŽ for short , which came under the patronage of the Bánské a Hutní , BaH for short , in a first wave of nationalization . A little later, all sports clubs were subordinated to the Sokol movement , the new name was now ZSJ BaH Olomouc . Another renaming to ZSJ MŽ Olomouc followed when the steelworks became an independent company.

During these years the club played in the I. A třída, the fourth division. The club was significantly strengthened in 1951 by players from the dissolved Sokol OD Olomouc, formerly SK Olomouc ASO . 1954 succeeded under the name Baník MŽ Olomouc the promotion to the third division, but there you could only hold one year. In 1963 he succeeded under the name TJ MŽ Olomouc promotion to the second division, where Olomouc only stayed two seasons and had to relegate again, even up to the fourth division. In 1966 the club was renamed TJ Sigma MŽ Olomouc . Sigma is a large pump manufacturer from the Lutín commune in the Olomouc district. In 1965 the club moved into its current stadium, the Andrův stadium , which was then called the Stadion Míru (German: Stadium of Peace). Under coach Karel Brückner , Sigma was promoted to the ČNL B, the third division, group B in 1974. In 1977, the previously single-track second division was divided into two groups, so that Sigma reached a fifth place in his third division group for promotion.

Promotion to the 1st division

After two third places and a fourth place in the second division, Sigma was promoted to the first division in 1981/82. With only 16 points you had to leave the top division as the bottom of the table. In 1983/84, Sigma managed to regain promotion immediately, and the club has not been relegated since then. In 1986 the team finished fourth, which entitles them to participate in the 1986/87 UEFA Cup . Against the eventual winner IFK Göteborg Sigma was eliminated in the first round with 1: 1 and 0: 4.

successes

The most successful season in the club's history up to that point was the 1990/91 season. With only two points behind champions Sparta Prague , Sigma took third place. In the 1991/92 UEFA Cup , the team reached the quarter-finals after victories over Bangor FC , Torpedo Moscow and Hamburger SV . There they only narrowly failed 1: 1 and 0: 1 at Real Madrid . Players such as Pavel Hapal , Milan Kerbr , Martin Kotůlek , Michal Kovář and Radoslav Látal were involved in this success . A year later, Sigma made it into the UEFA Cup again, failing in the third round to Juventus Turin . The greatest success up to that point was the Czech runner-up in 1995/96, in addition to Kerbr, Kotůlek and Kovář, Martin Vaniak , Miroslav Baranek and Karel Rada were also involved. The coach was Karel Brückner. 2000/01 moved Sigma Olomouc to the final of the UEFA Intertoto Cup , but lost to Udinese Calcio in the extension of the second leg . In 2009, the club qualified for the Europa League and reached there after victories over Fram Reykjavík and FC Aberdeen the play-off round, where they were eliminated against Everton .

On May 2, 2012, the club celebrated its greatest success to date. In the cup final in Plzeň , Sigma Olmütz was able to prevail 1-0 against the favorites Sparta Prague . The decisive goal came -back Michal Veprek in the 46th minute. However, UEFA banned the club from participating in the 2012/13 UEFA Europa League for bribery .
