Snatam Kaur Khalsa ( Punjabi : ਸਨਾਤਮ ਕੌਰ ਖ਼ਾਲਸਾ; * 1972 in Trinidad , Colorado ) is an American singer and composer. In their pop music there are musical influences from the religious prayer chants of Sikhism , called kirtan . She lives in Española , New Mexico .

education and profession

Growing up in California , Snatam Kaur learned Kirtan from her mother. In high school she learned to play the violin and began composing her own songs. Bob Weir from Grateful Dead coached her and her classmates on the song Saving the Earth for the 1990 Earth Day concert in San Francisco with 70,000 listeners. Then she studied Kirtan with her mother's teacher, Bhai Hari Singh.

Kaur holds a bachelor's degree in biochemistry and also works as a food technician in Eugene , Oregon .
