Douglas "Jai" Uttal (born June 12, 1951 in New York City ) is an American fusion musician ( vocals , harmonium , guitar , sarod , banjo ) who interprets Indian-influenced world music.

Live and act

Uttal learned classical piano from the age of 7; later the banjo, guitar and harmonica were added. At the age of 17 he discovered Indian music , which touched him deeply. At the age of nineteen he moved to California to study sarod with Ali Akbar Khan . He later lived temporarily in India, where he became familiar with the practice of sankirtang . His first album, Footprints , was released on Triloka Records in 1991; Trumpeter Don Cherry and singer Lakshmi Shankar were involved. Further albums followed in the next few years with his Pagan Love Orchestra , in which musicians such as Peter Apfelbaum , Peck Allmond and Steve Gorn were involved. His album Shiva Station (1997) was mixed by Bill Laswell . Later albums like Thunder Love (2009) are considered to be "a pan-cultural potpourri of sounds and genres from around the world, seamlessly integrated into a contemporary pop / rock format."

Uttal was also responsible as a music producer for two albums by Ustad Ali Akbar, Journey and Garden of Dreams .
