Lakshmi Shankar

Lakshmi Shankar (born June 16, 1926 in Jamshedpur , † December 30, 2013 in California ) was an Indian singer who interpreted Indian classical music . She is considered one of the most recognized singers in Indian classical music and the first Indian classical singer to popularize Indian vocal music in the West.

Life

Shankar became interested in dance as a young girl and began to learn Bharatanatyam , encouraged by her mother . This is one of the classical dance styles today . From the mid-1930s, when Lakshmi Sastri, as Lakshmi Shankar was called around this time, Rukmini Devi Arundale , Kalanidhi Narayan and other girls and young women of Brahmin origin performed Bharatanatyam, they made a decisive contribution to the bad reputation of the until then only devadasis to lift danced style. In 1939 she joined Uday Shankar's troops ; later she married his brother, the screenwriter Rajendra Shankar. Due to illness, she had to stop dancing and took lessons from Abdul Rehman Khan, a representative of the Patiala Gharana . Other teachers of hers were BR Deodhar and also her brother-in-law, Ravi Shankar , who brought her to many of his projects. In 1946/47 she was involved in the establishment of Pandit Nehrus Discovery of India for ballet. She made her first recordings in the 1960s. In 1974 she toured internationally with Ravi Shankar and was involved in his albums Shankar Family & Friends and Ravi Shankar's Music Festival from India . After Ravi Shankar had a heart attack in September 1974, she led the orchestra for the remainder of the American tour. She released other albums under her own name, on which she also interpreted Tamil folk songs and Hindu prayers . Her album Dancing in the Light (2008) was nominated for a Grammy . She was also involved in film scores (for example on the soundtrack of Gandhi or Johar Mehmood in Hong Kong ). She has also composed for the Shakti group and written the ballet music Bharatanatyam for the Californian dance group Shakti School of Bharatanatyam .
