Ron Korb is a Canadian flutist of the New Age - and world music . He is also a composer and music producer . He lives in Toronto , Ontario, Canada . He plays a wide variety of flute instruments from all over the world and has studied many subjects from classical, jazz and Celtic as well as South American and Asian music as well as tones and rhythms of the Middle East.

Life

Korb's musical education began in elementary school with a recorder ; in his youth he joined an Irish marching band. While attending the Royal Conservatory of Music, Korb won several local music competitions. He later attended York University for a year to expand his jazz experience. He received a scholarship for classical flute from the University of Toronto , where he graduated with honors as an interpreter. Its principal professor was Douglas Stewart. Korb also took part in master classes with Robert Aitken in Shawnigan, with Raymond Guiot in Domaine Forget, with Michel Debost in Assisi and with Severino Gazzelloni in Siena in Italy. He later discovered the Chinese flutes (Chin: 笛子, pinyin: dÍ zÎ). The sound of the Asian flutes fascinates him. He therefore moved to Japan to study Japanese gagaku court music and the traditional shinobue and ryūteki bamboo flutes with Akao Michiko. Since then he has been looking for traditional music and instruments while visiting foreign countries. He now has a collection of over 200 flutes from all over the world.

Korb has released over 30 solo recordings in 20 countries with various music publishers. He has also worked on recordings by many famous artists such as Olivia Newton-John , Liona Boyd , Mychael Danna , Jim McCarty , the Renaissance (band) and on the World Youth Day recording for Pope John Paul II . As a studio musician, he was involved in film and television productions. He has played in many projects that have been awarded Gemini or Genie and won awards at the Cannes International Film Festival . He has also starred in Oscar-nominated films by directors such as Ang Lee , Atom Egoyan , John Woo and Mira Nair . In Robert Lepage 's film “No”, Korb played Nokan in front of the camera, in the first scene, in traditional kimono clothing.

Korb has performed on all five continents and has given concerts in prominent locations such as the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC, the Glastonbury Festival in England, the National Theater of Panama, the Heian-Jingü in Kyoto Japan, the Zhong Shan Hall in Formosa , the Shanghai International Music Festival, the Century Theater in Beijing and the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall in Guangzhou China. He also represented Canada at Expo 2005 in Nagoya Japan. He was also the opening act for Cesária Évora and with the singer Dadawa on tour in China and Canada.

In 2008, Korb was asked to compile a textbook with flute and piano pieces that the Australian Music Board of Examiners for Flute put on the curriculum.

Compositions

Korb composes culturally diverse music. Many of his songs are based on stories. These in turn became accessible to him through research into his multi-cultural origins and his extensive travel experience. In addition to his instrumental pieces, Ron Korb has also written songs for the most important Asian singers. His song for Alan Tam (Chin: 譚詠麟) achieved double platinum sales. Another song for the “Godfather of Cantopop” Roman Tam (Chin: 羅文) won a Grammy for best original composition in the RTHK Awards , Hong Kong's equivalent. Korb also wrote a song for the Olympic Games, which Toronto applied for. This composition was performed by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra . Korb also composed music for film, dance and theater.
