Radio Television Hong Kong , abbr .: RTHK ( Chinese  香港 電台  /  香港 电台 , Pinyin Xiānggǎng Diàntái , Jyutping Hoeng ¹ gong ² Din ⁶ toi ⁴ , short: 港台 , Gǎngtái , Jyutping Gong ² toi ⁴ ) is a public broadcaster based in Hong Kong . RTHK operates seven radio stations as well as school and educational television in Hong Kong - English Education Television Hong Kong, abbr .: ETVHK . The broadcaster also produces various television programs that it makes available to the private television operator in Hong Kong. Although RTHK is funded by the Hong Kong government, the station is known for its social and government critical attitude in its programs.

The origins of the station can be traced back to 1923, when a few amateur radio enthusiasts got involved with a community radio station and founded an unofficial radio station in Hong Kong. In June 1928, this station was officially taken over by the then Hong Kong government under the station code - GOW - and renamed Radio Hong Kong , abbr .: RHK - 香港 廣播 電台  /  香港 广播电台 - after several changes of name in 1948 . A year later, RHK was subordinated to Government Information Services - GIS . In 1954 the station became independent. RHK broadcast three times a day until 1966 . In 1976 the station got its current name. Its first news channel was launched in 1989. In 1994 RTHK went online.
