The Legislative Council of Hong Kong ( Chinese  香港 立法 會  /  香港 立法 会 , Pinyin Xiānggǎng Lìfǎhuì , Jyutping Hoeng 1 gong 2 Lap 6 faat 3 wui 6 * 2 , English Legislative Council of Hong Kong ), LegCo for short and the official Legislative Council of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region , is the unicameral parliamentary legislative assembly of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China .

    history

Hong Kong had been a British colony since January 26, 1841. By edict of Queen Victoria the Charter of the Colony of Hong Kong was issued on June 26, 1843 , which provided for a Legislative Council as an advisory body. The real power in the crown colony lay with the governor . The legislative council consisted of four members and the governor. It was only a matter of representing the "white" colonial rulers, not the local population. In 1888, the regulation was changed so that the governor can only issue regulations in agreement with the council.

After the Sino-British joint declaration on Hong Kong in 1984, it was clear that Hong Kong would be surrendered to the People's Republic of China. Now the colony was democratized and the first parliamentary elections were held in Hong Kong on September 26, 1985 (still by indirect choice) .

After the transition to the People's Republic of China on July 1, 1997, the Hong Kong Basic Law is effective as the constitution of Hong Kong, which regulates the legislative council as parliament in Articles 66 to 79.

On the anniversary of the return of Hong Kong to China, the weeks of protests against the extradition law in Hong Kong in 2019 escalated . Hundreds of demonstrators occupied the Legislative Council on Monday evening July 1, 2019. Police officers cleared the area on Tuesday night (local time) with protective shields, batons and rifles with rubber bullets and searched the parliament building.
