Consultative Assembly (Oman)

The Consultative Assembly ( Arabic مجلس الشورى Majlis asch-Shura , DMG Maǧlis aš-Šūrā ) is the legislature of the Sultanate of Oman with 83 elected members, but the legislative power rests solely with the Sultan Qaboos ibn Said .

The monarch also makes the final voting decisions and can reject election results. No political parties are allowed in Oman . Only non-attached candidates can be elected. A proportional system is used for voting. Provinces with more than 30,000 inhabitants send two delegates, smaller ones elect one delegate. The second chamber is the State Assembly ( Majlis ad-Dawla ).

So far the following legislative periods have existed:

  • 1991-1994
  • 1994-1997
  • 1997-2000
  • 2000-2003
  • 2003-2007
  • 2007-2011
  • 2011-2015

The acting chairman in 2012 was Khalid bin Hilal bin Nasir al Mawali.

On March 13, 2011, Sultan Qaboos ibn Said introduced a decree that gave parliament legislative and supervisory powers.
