Meschrano Jirga

As Meschrano Jirga ( Pashtun مشرانو جرګه) is the name given to the upper house of the Afghan two-chamber parliament. Meschrano Dschirga means something like "house of the elders".

The Meschrano Jirga consists of 102 members. A third of these are elected by the district councils for 3 years, a third by the provincial councils for 4 years, and a third are nominated by the President of Afghanistan for 5 years. According to the law, half of the candidates nominated by the president must be women, two seats are reserved for disabled candidates and two for the Kuchi nomads.

However, no district council elections took place during the 2005 general election. The district elections planned for 2010 together with the parliamentary elections did not take place either.

meaning

The Meschrano Jirga plays less of a legislative, more of an advisory role. Nevertheless, through its right of veto, it has a strong impact on political decisions.
