Council Assembly (Bahrain)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Consultative Council , or Council Assembly, is the upper house of the National Assembly , the most important legislative body in Bahrain after the royal family; however, the de facto legislative power rests with the monarch Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa .

The council consists of 40 members who are appointed directly by the King of Bahrain . The forty seats of the Consultative Council, together with the forty elected seats of the Council of Representatives, constitute the National Assembly. All laws (except the “royal decrees ”) must be passed by both chambers of the assembly. This allows technical experts and minority communities to have a role in the legislative process: one Christian and one Jewish woman were appointed to the council.

The chairman of the Consultative Council also acts as chairman of the National Assembly. The legislative period lasts four years.

The largest opposition faction is the Wifak .
