    history

The first parliamentary elections were held in South Ossetia before the de facto independence from Georgia , when efforts to break away from Georgia grew stronger in South Ossetia. After the South Ossetia War from 1991 to 1992, the country achieved de facto independence. Parliamentary elections were held in 1994, 1999, 2004 and most recently in 2009.

After the Georgian offensive in the Caucasus War in 2008 , the parliament building, which had been built in 1937, was badly damaged by artillery fire, after which reconstruction began.

Three parties have been represented in parliament since the 2009 elections: Unity , with 17 seats, the People's Party of South Ossetia with nine seats and the Communist Party of South Ossetia with eight seats.
