The Legislative Council of Brunei ( English Legislative Council of Brunei , Malay Majlis Mesyuarat Negara ) is the legislative branch in the one-chamber system of Brunei . It is based in the State Legislative Council Building in the capital, Bandar Seri Begawan .

The Legislative Council only has an advisory role for the Sultan, especially on questions of the state budget .

history

The council was established in 1959 by Article 3 of the Brunei Constitution . Its first meeting took place on October 21, 1959 in Lapau . The Legislative Council had its last session on February 12, 1984, before Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah dissolved it and took absolute power. It was not until September 25, 2004 that Parliament was reinstated by a declaration by the Sultan. This was dissolved again on September 1, 2005 and re-established one day later on the basis of the new constitution (Section 6).

MPs

The Legislative Council consists of the Brunei sultan , the Crown Prince as a member of the Council of Ministers of Brunei , all ministers of the Council of Ministers and three different types of other members: noble members, representatives of the districts and other members. All members are appointed by the Sultan and must be at least 21 years old.

It currently (March 2019) has 36 members.

The Legislative Council sits in the State Legislative Council Building , which was opened by the Sultan on March 4, 2008 after several years of construction. It is located about 15 minutes drive from the center of Bangar Seri Begawan. The foundation stone for the building was laid on July 28, 2005. The monumental construction stands on 10.7 hectares and cost 62 million Brunei dollars .

At the porte-cochère there are five and nine columns, which are supposed to symbolize the year 1959, the introduction of the Brunei constitution. At the entrance to the boardroom there are eight and four pillars that are supposed to symbolize the year of independence, 1984.
