Bandar Seri Begawan ([ ˈbandar səˈri baˈɡawan ], Jawi :بندر سري بڬاوان, Malay for port of the revered ruler , from Persian Bandar = port and Sanskrit Shri Bhagwan = revered ruler, mostly just called BSB ; until 1970 Brunei City ) is the capital of Brunei . It is located on the Brunei River , which flows not far into Brunei Bay and thus into the South China Sea .
The last official figures from the 2001 census speak of 27,300 inhabitants. In 2007 the area of the city was enlarged from the original 12.87 km² to its current 100.36 km². The city has (as of 2007) around 100,000 inhabitants.
In a ranking of cities according to their quality of life, Bandar Seri Begawan was ranked 106th out of 231 cities worldwide in 2018.
In 2011, a master plan was drawn up for the development of the city by 2035.
Economy and Transport
Manufacturers of furniture , textiles , handicrafts and wood are based in the city. Furthermore, oil and natural gas are processed in Bandar Seri Begawan . Water taxis connect the city center with Kampong Ayer . The Temburong Bridge was completed in March 2020 and since then connects BSB for the first time by road with the Temburong exclave .
Brunei's only airport is Brunei International Airport , which is about eight kilometers north of the city.
Attractions
The city's attractions include the Palace of the Sultan of Brunei, the Istana Nurul Iman , which is the largest palace in the world with more than 1,800 rooms and 200,000 square meters of built-up area, and the Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque , which was built in 1958 . The Royal Regalia Building with the Royal Regalia Museum is also a popular tourist destination.
Near the mosque is Kampong Ayer (German about water village ), a village built on stilts over the water with its own schools and smaller mosques for over half of the residents of Bandar Seri Begawan. Another attraction is the Jame '-' Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque , which is the largest in the country.
