The Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque is a royal mosque in the capital of Brunei , Bandar Seri Begawan . It is a symbol of the city and the whole country. The mosque is considered one of the most beautiful and impressive in the Asia-Pacific region and is a tourist attraction. The mosque is named after the 28th Sultan of Brunei , Omar Ali Saifuddin III. , named and is considered the highest symbol of the Islamic faith in Brunei. The building was completed in 1958.
architecture
The architecture of the mosque is modeled on the Malay and Mughal architecture . Planned by the Italian architect Rudolfo Nolli , the mosque was laid out on an artificial lagoon on the edge of the Brunei River , surrounded by the water town of Kampong Ayer .
The mosque consists of marble - minarets and golden domes with numerous courtyards and fountains. It is surrounded by numerous trees and gardens which, according to Islamic belief, represent the sky. A long bridge connects the mosque with the lagoon village of Kampong Ayer.
The main dome of the Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque is completely covered with gold leaf . With a height of 52 meters, it can be seen from anywhere in Bandar Seri Begawan , underlining its importance. The main minaret, the highest part of the mosque, is dominated by the Renaissance architectural style , which can hardly be found in any other mosque.
