The Istana Nurul Iman ( Malay for Palace of the Light of Faith ) in the Brunei capital Bandar Seri Begawan is a palace (Malay Istana ) and has been the residence and official residence of the Sultan of Brunei (currently Hassanal Bolkiah ) since 1984 . It is the largest palace on earth.

The palace is located a few kilometers west of downtown Bandar Seri Begawan on the Brunei River .

Istana Nurul Iman was planned by the Filipino architect Leandro Locsin and built by the Filipino construction company Ayala International . Khuan Chew , who also furnished the Burj al Arab in Dubai , is responsible for the interior design .

Large ballroom for 5000 people

The Sultan's home includes 1788 rooms, 18 elevators, 44 staircases and 250 bathrooms on a living space of 200,000 . The sultan's throne room can accommodate 2000 people and the banquet room can accommodate 5000 people. Window and door arches are made of pure gold, 64,000 square meters of wall surface are clad with 38 different types of marble. The magnificent building is said to be a mixture of Arab tents and Malay longhouses. The building complex consists of a 120 hectare site.

The palace complex includes an underground garage of 10,000 square meters that can accommodate 110 vehicles from the Sultan's vehicle collection. There are also air-conditioned stables for 200 horses on the palace grounds. The art collection of the Sultan includes, but is a painting by Pierre-Auguste Renoir , the 70 million in 1980 dollars was purchased.

The palace is open to the public three days a year on the festival of the breaking of the fast at the end of the Islamic fasting month of Ramadan . On these days, all visitors are given a rich feast free of charge and the Sultan greets every male guest personally with a handshake; Women are received by the queen. Every year up to 120,000 people visit the Sultan on these days.
