  • The Parliament of Kurdistan ( Kurdish پەرلەمانی كوردستان Parlamena Kurdistanê , or Perlemanî Kurdistan for short ) or PK has been the unicameral parliament of the Kurdistan Autonomous Region in Iraq since 1991 . Yousef Mohammed Sadiq has been parliamentary president since 2013, while Jaafer Nimki is his deputy.

    The parliament of Kurdistan consists of representatives of various political parties or lists who are elected for four years to serve as representatives of their respective province. The parliament is known as the national assembly . The last election took place on September 30, 2018.

    The parliament is a body consisting of 111 members, with 11 seats reserved for non- Kurdish minority communities in the Kurdistan region. The building is located in Erbil , the official capital of the Kurdistan Autonomous Region.

    Parliament holds two sessions a year, with each session spanning four months throughout the year. It works through committees covering specific areas such as law, education , finance and economics , external relations and culture . Legislative proposals and drafts are initiated by the Council of Ministers or by at least ten individual members of parliament, in order to then vote on them and finally have them passed by the President of the Autonomous Region of Kurdistan.

    There are 111 seats as stipulated by Law No. 1, which was passed by the National Council in 1992. Women currently hold 39 seats. The law stipulates that at least 30% of parliamentarians should be women. Eleven seats are reserved for the Assyrian-Aramaic , Armenian and Turkmen population groups in the provinces administered by the regional government.
