The Veddel tram tunnel is a 220 meter long tunnel in Hamburg - Veddel . Originally built to allow a tram line to pass under a motorway slip road without crossing , the tunnel has been used by buses and taxis since the tram service was closed. That is why it is now called the Veddel bus tunnel .

history

The Hamburg tram crossed the Norderelbe in the middle of the New Elbe Bridge . When the southern end of the bridge was to be connected to the motorway to Bremen (today A 255 ), it was necessary that the tram could cross the south-facing lane of the motorway without crossing so as not to obstruct car traffic.

For this purpose, the shell of the tunnel was constructed using the cut-and-cover method in 1938/39 . The closed frame construction made of reinforced concrete was erected on ten meter long concrete piles in order to have support in the soft ground. The beginning of the Second World War prevented the building from being completed, which was then converted into an air raid shelter by 1940 by installing partition walls, toilets and gas locks .

After the end of the war, work was resumed and the tunnel finally opened on November 24, 1949. It was the only level crossing between road traffic and trams in the Hamburg city area. The slightly S-shaped line was double-tracked, but could only be driven on at 15 km / h when viewed, as no signals were installed in the tunnel.

The tram line to Veddel was closed on May 22, 1977, a year and a half before the final shutdown of the tram in Hamburg. Since then, buses and taxis have been using the tunnel, which was extended to 220 meters in 1986 when the motorway was expanded.
