The Islamic Union of Kurdistan ( KIU , Kurdish يه كگرتووى ئيسلامي كوردستان Yekgirtuy Islamî Kurdistan ) is an Islamic - Kurdish party in Kurdistan led by Salaheddine Bahaaeddin . It is based in the Kurdish capital Erbil and is considered close to the Muslim Brotherhood .

history

Founded in Erbil in the early 1990s , the KIU had a close relationship with the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt and other countries in the Middle East from the start. Especially in the period after the Iraq war , the party gained popularity and was able to establish itself as an Islamic-democratic movement in the region.

However, its theological character also leads to problematic disputes with other groups and parties in Kurdistan , even if it openly opposes so-called Islamist terrorism . In recent years it has been able to assert itself as a small, but nevertheless noteworthy counterpoint to the established secular parties. It clashes again and again with the Democratic Party of Kurdistan , because it has a remarkable electorate in its strongholds.
