The National Assembly ( Lao : ສະ ພາ ແຫ່ງ ຊາດ , Sapha Heng Xat , French Assemblée Nationale ) is the parliament in the unicameral system of Laos . In the Marxist-Leninist one-party system , the National Assembly, which meets twice a year, is politically less important than the ten-member Standing Committee of the National Assembly and the eleven-member Politburo of the ruling party LRVP.

Elections take place every five years, with one MP representing 50,000 people.
The only legal political party in the country is the Lao People's Revolutionary Party .
In the elections on April 30, 2006, 115 members were elected for the 6th legislative period . Thongsing Thammavong became President of Parliament . The 7th legislative period from 2011 to 2016 had 132 parliamentarians.
After the election on March 20, 2016, there were 149 MPs in the National Assembly of Laos, 144 of them from the ruling Lao People's Revolutionary Party and 5 non-party .
