Parliamentary election in Afghanistan 2005
In the parliamentary elections in Afghanistan in 2005 , both the parliaments (including Meschrano Jirga ) and the provincial councils were elected. It was the first parliamentary election in Afghanistan since the 1988 elections .
On September 18, 2005, the elections for the Wolesi Jirga , the "House of the People", and the 34 provincial councils took place in Afghanistan . There were 2,800 candidates (330 women) for the 249 seats in parliament (68 per quota for women) and over 3,000 for the provincial councils. Despite attack threats, 12.7 of the 28 million Afghans were registered. In the end, 6.8 million people went to vote, which corresponds to a turnout of around 54%. Parties are prohibited by the constitution. The election was considered a success internationally and marked the end of the so-called “ Petersberg Process ”.
